2005 Hall of Fame Dinner

NEWARK, NJ - In its 15th induction ceremony, the NJIT Athletic Hall of Fame welcomed Andrew Bakun '82, a standout in men's soccer; Carmine DeNicola '78, a two-time all-State selection in baseball; Paul Sarlo '92, who holds the single-season school records for batting (.500) and RBI (41); Nevea Van Wright '97, NJIT's first female to score 1,000 points and Bob Welgos '62, who was a multi-sport standout in men's basketball and bowling.

Bakun, a four-year starter for coach Mal Simon, played right fullback as a freshman before playing the next two seasons as a sweeper, earning all-State honors as a sophomore and all-Area as a junior. During his senior year, he was named NSCAA Division III all-American as a midfielder and ended his career with eight goals scored.

DeNicola, was a three-time all-Independent Athletic Conference and two-time all-State baseball player award winner. In his four-year career as a Highlander, he tied the school record for career stolen bases with (74) and is third all-time in runs scored (96).

Sarlo, was named Independent Athletic Conference Player of the Year, first-team all-Region and ranks in six offensive all-time NJIT categories. He graduated as the single-season school record for batting (.500, 51-102), season runs batted (41), and is tied with Nick Kaminsky, holding the record for triples in a season with (7).

Van Wright, is one of two student-athletes in school history to be a four-time Most Valuable Player candidate, joining swimmer and Hall of Famer Thom Broadley. She was a three-time all-Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, NJIT's first female 1,000-point scorer and all-time leading scorer with 1,322 career points. Van Wright ranks second in assists with (256), third in steals with (171) and career scoring average of (16.3) points.

Welgos, a multi-sport athlete, averaged 16.8 points per game during a three-year career and scored in double figures in 48 of 51 games. His most dominant year was his junior year when he scored 20 or more seven times in 18 games. As captain of the bowling team, he was a semifinalist in the Eastern Collegiate Bowling Championships.
