Robert Taetzsch, a standout fencer who ranked third in the state at Weequahic High School in Newark, Bob carried his skills to college, where he was part of teams that produced a four-year combined dual match record of 30-1. Bob's individual bout record was 77-13 over that span.

Although he sometimes competed in the epee and saber, his primary weapon was the foil.
