NEWARK, NJ - New Jersey Institute of Technology will play six 2007-08 basketball home games on four dates in Newark's Prudential Center, NJIT Director of Athletics Lenny Kaplan announced.
NJIT will host two stand-alone men's basketball games and two men's/women's doubleheaders in the brand new downtown home of the National Hockey League New Jersey Devils. The world-class arena is about one mile from NJIT's campus in Newark's University Heights section.
The two stand-alone games are in December, opening with a 7 pm game on December 6 vs. Army. A week later, the Highlanders will welcome Rutgers on December 13, for another 7 pm game, in what should be one of the highlights of the 2007-08 season.
Moving to January, NJIT will host two men's/women's doubleheaders. On Tuesday, January 15, the Highlander men and women will entertain their counterparts from Cornell. The women's game will begin at 6 pm, with the men's contest slated to follow at 8 pm.
The last date for NJIT in 'The Rock' is an Independent Division I doubleheader on Saturday, January 26--a day that will also include the men's alumni game. The current Highlander men will take on Texas-Pan American at 1 pm, with a women's game against Chicago State slated for 3 pm.
The Prudential Center, the newest arena in the NHL and the first major professional facility built in the New York Metropolitan area in more than 25 years, features numerous innovations. Among them is a 4,800-square foot exterior LED screen, one of the largest of its kind in the world.
The relationship between NJIT and the Prudential Center is a natural. 'The Rock' is the centerpiece of Newark's Downtown Core Redevelopment Project. NJIT, meanwhile, is an integral part of the city's educational, civic and economic life.
The arrival of the spectacular Prudential Center nearly coincides with NJIT's arrival as an NCAA Division I institution--the first in Newark and the newest in New Jersey in more than 20 years. 'The Rock' is opening one year after NJIT began Division I competition as part of its NCAA reclassification.
