PHILADELPHIA - John Cloud's goal 1:20 into overtime lifted Philadelphia University over visiting NJIT, 1-0, Saturday in Atlantic Soccer Conference men's competition.
Cloud, who was assisted by Devon Klipp, got the game-winner on a header off a corner kick. It was Cloud's first goal of the season and it came on just the second corner kick of the afternoon for Philadelphia.
Ezra Campbell made five saves to record the shutout for the Rams, who played their first ASC match of 2007. Collin Cunning started and made one save in goal for the Highlanders.
The final box score reflected the close final score, as NJIT had a 6-5 advantage in total shots, putting five of its six shots on goal. The corner kicks were 2-1 for the Rams and the fouls were 7-6, with the Highlanders drawing one more whistle than the home team.
On defense, the Highlanders allowed a total of five shots, but only two were on goal. Philadelphia had one first-half shot on goal, none in the second half and then Cloud's game-winning goal. The Rams managed just two overall shots after the first half.
NJIT got shots on goal from five different players--Osvaldo Perez, Gustav Warfving, Erik Magnusson, Brian Caine and Kevin Blanco.
The Highlanders will play a non-conference match on Tuesday at 4 pm, when they visit a strong Monmouth squad in West Long Branch, NJ. Monmouth, the 2006 Northeast Conference champions and an NCAA Division I College Cup qualifier, is off to a 4-2-2 start through games of last Thursday.
