NEWARK, NJ - Visiting College of Staten Island nipped New Jersey Institute of Technology, 104-98, in the men's swimming team home opener for NJIT Monday night.
NJIT started the night by taking the first two spots in the 200-yard medley relay, but Staten Island came back and gained and insurmountable lead in the individual events, before the Highlanders closed by taking the first three spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay, closing a 19-point deficit to six at the close of the meet.
NJIT started with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay by Mike Finley, Ed Lui, Hayk Ekshian and Rob Franc, who combined for a winning time of 1:50. 55.
The Highlanders had six second-place finishes in the 10 individual races, but only Lui, who swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.17, was able to capture a first-place finish.
The seconds for NJIT were: Andrew Coslow in the 1,000-yard freestyle; Finley in the 200 freestyle; Steve Schreyer in the 50 free and 100 back stroke; Ekshian in the 100-yard butterfly; and, Marc Ubaldi in the 100-yard free.
The Highlanders, 1-1 on the season, will host Drew and Ocean County College on Wednesday at 6 pm in the Fleisher Athletic Center pool.
