Three School Records Fall in Tight Loss at Maritime

November 30, 2005

THROGGS NECK, NY - The New Jersey Institute of Technology men's swimming team set three new school records, but it wasn't quite enough to score a team win, at the State University of New York Maritime College, as the Privateers won, 110-91, at Maritime's campus in the Bronx Wednesday night.

The outcome was in doubt heading into the final event of the night, the 200-yard freestyle relay. Trailing, 95-89, the Highlanders could have pulled out a win with a first-place finish worth 11 points, but Maritime prevailed.

Junior Hayk Ekshian set two of the NJIT school records, while classmate Marc Ubaldi also set a record for the Highlanders. Ekshian established new standards in the 50-yard freestyle (22.95) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.68). Ubaldi's 50.67 in the 100-yard freestyle was also a record.

Mike Lawson (2:16.97) and Rob Franc (2:20.28) were the top two in the 200-yard individual medley, combining for 13 points for NJIT. Ed Lui (1:04.55) and Franc (1:07.66) did the same for the Highlanders in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Highlanders will visit Arcadia University in Pennsylvania on Saturday for a tri-meet that will also include William Paterson.
