BUFFALO, NY -
Senior co-captain Marc Ubaldi won the men's 200-yard and the 100-yard freestyle in 1:52.85 and 50.21, respectively, highlighting the day for New Jersey Institute of Technology in its swimming 103-77 loss at Canisius on Saturday.
Ubaldi's time in the 200 freestyle was a new school record, carving more than two seconds off his previous record of 1:55.02, set in November 2005.
In a very tight race, Ubaldi (54.96) trailed Chad Brooks (54.58) and Randall Snodgrass (54.58) of Canisius. Ubaldi's surge in the third 50 propelled him into a slight lead at the 150-yard mark and he built on his advantage with a fast final 50 to win the race by .72 second.
"Marc swam an exceptional, well-paced race here today," said second-year head coach Eric Rasmussen. "He used his conditioning and stamina to win the race in the second half; it was one of the best races I have ever seen him swim."
The Highlanders 200-yard medley relay team of Steve Schreyer, Rob Franc, Daniel Botero and James Paccioretti picked up points for a third-place finish at 1:53.65 to open the scoring for NJIT.
Ubaldi then won the 200 freestyle, before Franc (3rd at 23.81) and James Paccioretti (5th at 25.05) scored in the 50-yard freestyle.
The second record of the day came at the hands of freshman Alan Roberts. In one of the closest races of the day, Kevin O'Connell of Canisuis out touched Roberts 1:01.14 to 1:01.19. Roberts times bettered the existing NJIT school record of 1:01.77.
The Highlanders added points for the 200 individual medley (Mike Lawson); the 100-yard butterfly (Daniel Botero and Lawson); the 100 free (Ubaldi, Schreyer and Alan Roberts); the 500 free (Pablo Botero) and the 200 freestyle relay (Ubaldi, Schreyer, Paccioretti and Roberts).
The Highlanders are off until January 20, when they are scheduled to swim at Fairfield in Connecticut in a meet slated for an 11 am start.
