WARWICK, RI - The men's tennis team opened its spring season, Saturday night defeating University of Rhode Island, 4-3. The men improve their record to 4-2 while the Rams fall to 4-5 on the season.
The deciding match came down to the No. 2 singles match, which transfer Jonathan Lang pulled out a third set victory 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 despite fighting through leg cramps from the second set on.
Freshman Steve Erickson started out the match giving the Highlanders a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Henrik Almstrom at No. 1 singles. Cosmin Chiujdea followed with a straight set victory of his own 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Erickson and Chiujdea took a 8-3 victory over Almstrom and James McGuire at No. 1 doubles. In NJIT's first outing against URI at the Fleisher Center Almstrom and McGuire defeated Erickson and Chiujdea 8-3 on September 24, 2006. Ramy Lawandy and Lang defeated Andrew Costin and Kyle Duffy in a tie-breaker nail bitter 9-8 earning a point for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders will return to action on Saturday, February 10 when they travel to Sacred Heart for a 4pm match.
