MIAMI GARDENS, FL - A 2-1 split for the doubles point in favor of St. Thomas (FL) lifted the home team to a tight 4-3 men's tennis win over NJIT Tuesday in the first of four Spring Break contests for the Highlanders in Florida this week.
The squads split the singles competition 3-3, as NJIT prevailed in the first three spots and St. Thomas won at four through six. The first two doubles were close, with St. Thomas winning at one and NJIT at two and the decisive slot was a comfortable 8-1 win for St. Thomas that tilted the match in favor of the Bobcats.
Steve Erickson and Jonathan Lang each won twice, as Erickson took first singles (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Lang took second singles (6-4, 6-2), before the pair teamed for a 9-8 (7-5) win at second doubles.
Cosmin Chiujdea was 7-5, 6-4 winner at third singles, but he and Anthony Tunnero were nipped, 8-6, by St. Thomas in first doubles.
Diego Paredes and Kenneth Evans, who had won at fifth and fourth singles, respectively, teamed for the 8-1 third doubles win that gave St. Thomas the match win.
NJIT, 9-4, is scheduled to face Colgate on Wednesday in a match hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.
