NEWARK, NJ - The University of Rhode Island came to Newark and scored a 7-0 men's tennis win over New Jersey Institute of Technology Saturday on the Fleisher Athletic Center courts.
NJIT is 1-1, while the visiting Rams improve to 2-1.
Freshman Steve Erickson, at first singles, more than held his own, but eventually lost to URI's Henrik Almstrom in the third-set tiebreaker. The winning score for Almstrom was 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
URI won the other singles matches in straight sets, although NJIT's Steve Arlt made it difficult for URI's Adam Gart, forcing Gart to the tiebreaker in the second set. Gart was a 6-5, 7-6 (3) winner.
Arlt and Tim Weiman had the best doubles score for NJIT, falling to Gart and James McGuire, 5-8, in the pro set scoring.
The NJIT men who play the lion's share of their schedule in the Spring semester, will return to action on September 30, when they host Fordham in a 9 am match on the Fleisher Athletic Center courts.
