NEWARK, NJ - New Jersey Institute of Technology swept all three doubles matches and the teams split the six singles contests, allowing the Highlanders to claim a 4-3 win from visiting Saint Francis of Pennsylvania Saturday at Branch Brook Park.
The Highlanders won at first doubles, as the freshman duo of Steve Erickson and Cosmin Chiudjea took an 8-4 win. Damian Wentzel and Tim Weiman were 8-6 winners in second doubles and Keith Tracy and Ramy Lawandy registered an 8-4 win in third doubles.
Using the seven-point match scoring system, the team that wins the majority of doubles earns one point. The one point from doubles lifted NJIT to the win when the singles matches were split, 3-3.
NJIT's singles winners were: Chiudjea, 7-5, 6-3 in the second spot; Lawandy, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 at number four; and, Tracey, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 in fifth singles. In addition to the two three-set wins in singles, Erickson fell to Andre Sandu of Saint Francis at number one, 6-2, 3-6, 3-6.
