FORT WAYNE, IN - New Jersey Institute of Technology men's and women's tennis athletes Iulia Doci, Damian Wentzel, Ramy Lawandy and Tim Weiman were named to the national NCAA Division I Independent All-Academic team for 2007, Sports Information Director Christine Francies of IPFW announced today.

Doci, a graduate of British School of Barcelona High School in Spain and Weiman a junior graduate of North Brunswick are management majors. Wentzel a senior architecture major graduated from Pitman High School while teammate Lawandy a graduate of Bayonne High School is majoring in civil engineering.

Doci, had one of the most impressive individual wins by a Highlander woman this year when she defeated Rhode Island's senior Lara Maurer, who came into the match with a 22-1 at first singles for URI. Maurer was previously the #2 player at Kentucky, which was the 17th-ranked team in the country and she was 2nd-team all-Southeastern Conference. Doci finished out the 2006-07 season with a 16-6 overall record at first singles while winning nine matches at first doubles. With two more years left to compete at the Division I level, she has compiled at 35-8 career record. A native of Bistrita, Romania, Doci has a cumulative grade point average of 3.545.

Weiman, a junior complied a 6-14 overall record; 3-5 at No. 5 singles and 3-3 at No. 6 singles. In his last nine matches he posted a 4-5 record as he was a double winner at sixth singles and third doubles against Hofstra on April 10, 2007. A native of North Brunswick, NJ, Weiman has a cumulative grade point average of 3.31.

Wentzel, one of two seniors on the 2006-07 roster, posted an overall record of 1-3 in NJIT's first season competing at the NCAA Division I level. In the doubles competition Wentzel recorded a 3-6 overall record competing at No. 3 doubles. Wentzel shut-out Sheldon Wilson from Wagner in his last collegiate match at Tenafly Racquet Club. A native of Pitman, NJ, Wentzel has a cumulative grade point average of 3.423.

Lawandy, recorded a 5-12 overall record splitting time at No. 5 and No. 6 singles spot. He was 3-5 in his last eight matches. In a match against Florida Institute of Technology the spot light was on Lawandy as the match came down to No. 5 singles where junior Lawandy fought out a tough match defeating Christian Keibler 4-6,6-3, 6-4, securing a 5-4 win for NJIT.

In order to be eligible for the honor, student-athletes needed a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20, have reached at least sophomore athletic standing and be a starter or important reserve.

Other institutions represented on the team included Chicago State, IPFW, Longwood, Savannah State, South Dakota State, Texas-Pan American and UC Davis.
