Romeoville, Ill. - Jared Dayton of Lewis posted a match-high 19 kills and four block assists for the home team in a 3-2 men's volleyball decision over visiting NJIT Saturday night.
Lewis recorded its sixteenth win of the season defeating the Highlanders in five, 23-30, 30-26, 27-30, 30-28, 9-15 while NJIT falls to 9-9 on the year.
NJIT, who hit .263 in game one evened the match 1-1 taking game two, 30-26, and improved its hitting percentage to .500. Both teams spilt the next two frames bringing the match down to a fifth set. Lewis recorded seven kills on 13 attempts while the Highlanders only notched five kills on 20 attempts coming up short of the victory.
Dayton hit .406 for the game leading three players in double-figures. Billy Sahagian recorded 13 while Drew Pickering added 10. Alex Vigansky registered a game-high 11 total blocks (1 solo, 10 block assists).
Senior Leonardo Paludo led the Highlanders with 18 kills, seven digs while Co-captain Eduardo Welter registered a double-double with 14 kills, 10 digs.
Outside hitter Amobi Armstrong posted 13 kills and five digs. Senior Greg Wagner who hit .615 on the night was 10 for 13 with just two errors. Wagner added three block assists.
Junior setter Rodrigo Correa recorded a match-high 53 assists to go along with seven digs.
The Highlanders will return to action on March 21 and 22, and play in California at the University of the Pacific, which is not ranked now, but was as high as eighth before finishing 15th in the final national poll in 2007.
