PRINCETON, NJ - Junior outside hitter Peter Eichler had a match-high 19 kills, leading Princeton to a 3-1 win over visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology in a non-conference match-up Friday night.
The first and second games were especially close, as Princeton opened with a 30-24 win, before NJIT bounced back, 30-28, in the second frame. The Tigers gained the upper hand with a 30-22 win in game three and they led for most of the fourth game, before holding off the Highlanders, 30-22, to clinch the match.
The win lifted Princeton to 10-8 overall, as NJIT fell to 16-8.
The Highlanders were paced by sophomore Amobi Armstrong with 18 kills and five digs while Eduardo Welter collected a double-double notching 12 kills and 10 digs. Setter senior co-captain Mike Nonnenmann registered a team-high 32 assists.
For the Tigers, paced by Eichler with 19 kills, Phillip Rosenberg and Mike Vincent collected 17 and 12 kills apiece. Brendan Denham posted a match-high 55 assists in the victory. Rosenberg had a match-high 12 digs.
The Highlanders return to action on Monday, April 9 when they travel to New Haven for their final game in the EIVA Hay Division.
NJIT must win at New Haven to secure a first-place finish and the promotion to the higher power-rated EIVA Tait Division for 2008 that goes to the 2007 EIVA Hay champion. NJIT will continue into postseason, having clinched a spot in the Hay Division berth in the six-team EIVA playoffs.
