NJIT Closes Regular Season with 19th Win

BANNER ELK, NC - The New Jersey Institute of Technology men's volleyball team closed the 2007 regular season with a 3-2 win over Mount Olive in the second match of the Lees-McRae Tournament Saturday, raising the Highlanders' record to 19-9 heading into postseason.

NJIT which will begin the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association playoffs in the week ahead, wrapped up its regular schedule with a 20-30, 30-27, 31-33, 30-24, 15-12 win over Mount Olive. The Highlanders had defeated host Lees-McRae, 3-1, in the tournament opener Friday night.

Amobi Armstrong was the kills leader for NJIT on Saturday, notching 19 on 30 attempts, with six errors, for a .433 attack percentage. Leonardo Paludo had 17 kills, followed by Eduardo Welter, with 16.

Greg Wagner continued to be deadly efficient in the middle, producing kills on all nine of his swings against Mount Olive. He had nine kills in 10 attempts Friday night. With 34 kills and no errors in his last 35 attack attempts, Wagner's season totals now stand at 225 kills, 42 errors and 401 attempts for a .456 attack percentage.

Rodrigo Correa had 50 assists for NJIT, while Armstrong led the floor defense, collecting nine digs. Armstrong and Robert Thomas were the blocks leaders, with three apiece.

This season's 19 wins are the most for NJIT since the 1999 team finished with a 24-5 record. The 19 wins also stand as the second-highest total since 1995, when the team finished 20-13.
