NEWARK, NJ - Stefania Santoli stole an errant clearing pass and chipped the ball high into the goal from 25 yards out, lifting New York Institute of Technology to a 2-1 women's soccer win over New Jersey Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon.
Santoli, who had assisted on the first goal of the match, got the deciding goal midway through the second half, breaking a 1-1 tie that had existed since the 22nd minute. NJIT was attempting to clear the ball out of the penalty area, but the ball was not struck cleanly and it went to Santoli, who quickly controlled and got off the floater that angled under the crossbar and into the net.
In the first half, Santoli sent a pass from midfield, setting up Krista Yulfo, who ran onto the ball and sent the ball past sprawling Highlander goalkeeper Bruna Lotufo at 15:09.
The Highlanders drew even a little more than six minutes later thanks to the passing of Katie Hepfinger and the determined effort of Joanna Powdhar. Hepfinger found Powdhar in front of the goal and the senior's first shot hit the post, but she drove the rebound home for her first college goal at 21:15.
NYIT, 7-3 in its last 10 games, after an 0-6 start, outshot the Highlanders, 11-7. Jenna Ament went the distance in goal for the visitors, making 3 saves. NJIT used two goalkeepers. Lotufo made 5 saves and allowed the two goals in 64:37. Angelica Sepulveda entered when Lotufo sustained a bloodied nose in a collision with 25:23 left. Sepulveda saved two shots.
The Highlanders will host Monmouth on Thursday at 7 pm on Lubetkin Field.
