OREUM, UT - NJIT women's soccer players Erika Taugher, Sadie Mele and Kyrsten Howell-Harries share the United Soccer Conference weekly awards with Longwood's freshman Katie Devlin, award coordinator Brent Johnson of Utah Valley announced.
In the final week of the regular season for weekly awards, NJIT senior Taugher took home Player of the Week for the first time this season. Freshman goalkeeper Mele tabbed Goalie of the Week for the third time this year while freshman Howell-Harries and Longwood's Devlin were named co-Newcomers of the Week.
In a 1-0-1 week for the Highlanders, the Highlanders recognized seven seniors in pre-game ceremonies and one of them -- Taugher scored what proved to the game-winning goal late in the first half against Saint Peter's. Taugher's goal raised her career points total to 36--a new record for NJIT women's soccer. The goal was the 13th of her career, tying the NJIT all-time mark for goals and her 10 career assists (which came against South Carolina State on Friday night) are also tied for the all-time lead. NJIT posted a 3-0-1 record in their last four regular season contests.
In a 1-1 tie against South Carolina State, with her team dominating the ball and playing mostly in the attacking half, NJIT goalkeeper Mele rarely even touched the ball. On Sunday night in a win against Saint Peter's Mele recorded her second shutout of the season notching three saves in the victory.
In a 1-0-1 week for the Highlanders, Howell-Harries recorded her first and second collegiate assists as a Highlander against Saint Peter's Sunday night. On her first assist, she slipped the ball thru two defenders and on her second assist she passed the ball ahead to teammate Emma Vinski.
Longwood's Devlin, a midfielder, scored one goal on four shots in Longwood's three games last week.
