FAIRFIELD, CT - Fairfield defeated visiting NJIT, 139-31, in women's swimming Saturday afternoon as the Highlanders set five season-best times in five events.

Sadie Mele, Karen Cilento, Teresa Higgins and Ashley Craig started off the meet recording a season-best time in the 200 medley relay.

Higgins swam her best times of the season in the 200 free and 400 free while rookie Cilento recorded a season-best in the 100 free placing first and recording nine points for the Highlanders.

Coach Eric Rasmussen added, "The Fairfield pool is 25 meters (as opposed to the usual 25 yards) so the times were a bit slower, but when converted we had some good swims."

Additionally, Mele's time in the 100 backstroke converted to a time that is faster than the NJIT school record. The school-record which is held by Ana Ossa in 100 backstroke was set on January 25, 2004 with a time of 1:07.44.

"After a few weeks of our hardest training, this meet was a good test for us.", said Rasmussen.

The NJIT women's swimming team returns to action on Saturday, January 26 when they compete in its first tri-meet of the 2008 season in Brooklyn, NY against Saint Francis (NY) and Howard.

The meet is scheduled for a 1pm start.
