BOCA RATON, FL - The New Jersey Institute of Technology women's tennis team opened its four-match Spring Break trip to Florida with a 7-0 loss at Florida Atlantic Monday afternoon.
The Highlanders, who are 7-4 in their first season competing at the NCAA Division I level, had some hard-fought individual matchups and came out ahead in third doubles (under the 7-point format, the six singles matches count in the score and the team that wins more of the three doubles matches gets a single point in that category).
The third doubles winners for NJIT were Chiori Koike and Marine Henry, who defeated their counterparts from FAU, 8-7 (3).
Henry also had one of the competitive singles matches, going out 6-3, 6-4 in fourth singles against Natalia Totevska of the Owls. The closest singles contest was in the first slot, where Florida Atlantic's Claudia Kecht edged NJIT's Iulia Doci, 5-7, 6-4, 11-9.
NJIT is scheduled to take on Florida Tech in Melbourne on Tuesday at noon.
