MELBOURNE, FL - Saint Louis defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology, 5-1, Thursday in a women's tennis match that was much closer than the score, as half the singles matches went to tiebreakers, in the finale of the NJIT's Spring Break trip to Florida.
Only the six singles spots were contested on Thursday and Saint Louis came out on top in five of them, but three of the six singles contests went to tiebreakers, two of which were won by the Billikens.
The NJIT win also went to a tiebreaker, as Chiori Koike prevailed at sixth singles, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4.
The first and fourth singles also went to tiebreakers, providing Saint Louis the cushion it needed to win the match.
In first singles, Katerina Lozanova of Saint Louis, nipped NJIT's Iulia Doci, 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 and in fourth singles, Rachel McCullagh prevailed in the tiebreaker, 10-6, after splitting the first two sets in widely varied fashion against NJIT's Marine Henry, 6-1 and 1-6.
NJIT, now 8-6, is scheduled to resume play back home in New Jersey on Saturday evening, when it hosts Sacred Heart in a 7 pm match in the Tenafly Racquet Club.
