FORT MYERS, FL - The match began well for NJIT, but it ended in a 4-3 defeat vs. Colgate Wednesday in the second of three matches on the Highlanders' Spring Break trip to Florida.
NJIT (11-4) came into the match having eight of the last nine, including four in a row, and the Highlanders began by capturing the doubles point due to victories in first and second doubles.
But Colgate (7-3) cooled off NJIT by taking four of the six singles contests.
The singles winners for NJIT by identical 6-2, 6-1 scores were number one player Iulia Doci, who beat Colgate's Elise DeRose, and Fanny Aizier in fourth singles. Doci had beaten DeRose last September 29, when they played in the Binghamton Invitational.
Doci and Fatima Kasem beat DeRose and Samantha Inacker in first doubles, 9-7, and Isha Toor and Dasa Stanimirovic won second doubles for the Highlanders, 8-6.
Which team would win and which would lose turned on two of Colgate's four singles wins. Two of the win went to three sets and a win by the Highlanders in either of the three-set contests would have swung NJIT into the victorious side of the ledger.
The three-set contests were at number three, where Isabel Riemer of Colgate edged Fatima Kasem of the Highlanders, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Erin Fenn took Stanimirovic, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 in fourth singles.
NJIT is slated to close out its Florida trip against Coastal Carolina on Thursday at 2 pm.
