URI Takes Tough Match from Highlanders, 5-2



Iulia Doci won easily at #1 singles and #1 doubles

KINGSTON, RI - NJIT got its only points in first and third singles, falling 5-2 in women's tennis at the University of Rhode Island Sunday afternoon.

Despite the final score, the match was close, as the squads split first and second doubles, but Rhode Island claimed the doubles point with an 8-6 win at third doubles. The Rams also took four of the singles slots, but one win took three sets and another was 6-4, 6-4 for URI.

NJIT's two points came from Iulia Doci at first singles and from Fatima Kasem at third singles.

Doci defeated Rhode Island's Nyssa Peele, 6-2, 6-0, and Kasem won a tight first set, 7-6 (4), before topping URI's Grace Hedstrom, 6-1, in the second set.

Doci and Kasem won the first doubles easily, taking Peele and Christen Cadigan, 8-1. But the Rams won the second doubles just as easily (8-1). And then Amanda Barletta and Kristen Liu, each of whom would win their singles slots, defeated NJIT's Chiori Koike and Fanny Aizier, 8-6.

Cadigan took the point for second singles from Isha Toor of the Highlanders, 6-7 (3), 6-0, 6-3 and Rhode Island's Liu beat Koike in the sixth slot, 6-4, 6-4.

NJIT (12-8) is set to close out its schedule on Saturday at 11 am against Long Island University at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
