NJIT Fares Well in Binghamton Tournament Singles

VESTAL, NY - Iulia Doci and Isha Toor each won two singles matches to lead the NJIT women's tennis team Saturday at the Binghamton Invitational hosted by Binghamton University.

Doci, the number one singles player for the Highlanders, stopped Colgate's Elise Derose, 6-3, 6-1, and then Marist's Cassie Strange, 6-1, 6-2.

Derose was all-Patriot League last year and Strange was the 2006-07 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and made all-MAAC at first doubles and second singles. Marist won the spring 2007 MAAC championship and advanced to the NCAA Division I championship tournament.

Isha Toor defeated Cameron Williams of Colgate, 6-4, 6-1, and Emily Zampello of Marist, 6-0, 6-0.

Fanny Aizier got NJIT's other singles win on the day. She defeated Marist's Alexia Strange, 6-3, 6-0, and lost to Erin Fenn of Colgate, 6-4, 6-1.

NJIT, which was 5-5 in its 10 singles matches did not get a win in doubles. Doci and Toor lost to the Binghamton duo of Lauren Bates and Anne Edelman, 8-5, in the Highlanders' closest doubles contest.

The Highlanders will continue play in the Binghamton Invitational on Sunday.
