VESTAL, NY - The NJIT women's tennis team won three of its doubles matches in second-day tournament competition at the Binghamton Invitational on Sunday.
Competing in a strong field that included host Binghamton, defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion and 2007 NCAA Tournament qualifier Marist and Colgate, the Highlanders won eight matches between singles and doubles over the two days of play.
On Sunday, the Highlanders took all three doubles matches against Colgate, while losing three doubles to Marist. NJIT was winless in five Sunday singles matches.
In Sunday doubles, the Highlanders number one team of Iulia Doci and Isha Toor defeated Colgate's Elise Derose and Samantha Inacker, 8-5.
Dasa Stanimirovic and Fanny Aizier won their doubles match vs. Colgate, 8-5, and Chiori Koike and Fatima Kasem topped their Colgate counterparts, 8-6.
The same three teams lost to Marist, 8-6, 9-7 and 9-7, respectively on Sunday.
Host Binghamton, which won 20 of the 24 singles and doubles matches it played in the tournament, swept all five Sunday singles competitions from NJIT.
Doci and Toor were the leading winners for NJIT over the two days. Doci won both of her singles competitions on Saturday, but did not compete in singles on Sunday.
Toor won her two singles competitions on Saturday, but fell against Binghamton's Yulia Smimova on Sunday.
The team of Doci and Toor went 1-2 in doubles, splitting its two Sunday contests. Stanimirovic, Aizier , Koike and Kasem all picked up their doubles wins with the Sunday sweep of Colgate.
The singles champions of the tournament were Lauren Bates of Binghamton in Flight A and Jen Marquit of Colgate in Flight B.
In doubles, Bates teamed with Anna Edelman for the Flight A crown, while the Flight B crown went to Marquit and her partner Alexi Aberant.
NJIT is off from competition until Friday, October 12, when it hosts Fordham on the Fleisher Athletic Center courts at a time to be determined.
