Highlanders Top Saint Francis (PA), 5-2

NEWARK, NJ - New Jersey Institute of Technology swept the first five singles spots for a 5-2 win over visiting Saint Francis of Pennsylvania Saturday at Branch Brook Park.

The Highlanders, who won to finish their fall schedule with a dual match record of 3-2 in their first season competing at the NCAA Division I level, took all five singles wins in straight sets. Saint Francis got its two points by forfeit (sixth singles and the deciding third doubles by forfeit, as the teams split the first two doubles matches).

NJIT's sophomore first singles player, Iulia Doci, was nearly flawless, taking Red Flash counterpart Roxy Ionescu, 6-1, 6-0.

Isha Toor of NJIT was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at second singles and she teamed with Fanny Aizier for an 8-4 win in second doubles. Fatima Kasem won at third singles, 6-1, 6-3 and Aizier blanked Mallory Palmer, 6-0, 6-0, in the fourth slot. Grace Bogdan secured NJIT's fifth point with a 6-3, 6-4 winner in fifth singles.

Abby Ball and Samantha Fulchiero won first doubles for the visitors, Toor and Aizier won second doubles and the Red Flash earned the team point from doubles with a forfeit win at number three.

The Highlanders will resume action in early February 2007.
