Hefferan top-finisher in 3000 meter steeplechase

ALLENTOWN, PA - Over the weekend at the CTC Championships, NJIT had two individual champions - Amanda Hefferan in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase and Umar Saeed in the men's 5000 meter run in track and field action.

Heffernan a freshman led the race from start to finish breaking her own record by 20 seconds with a time of 11:56.92, earning 10 points for the Highlanders.

Saeed a junior had the most exciting race of the day in the 5000 meter run. He started off the race leading the first eight laps but later dropped down to fourth. Umar retook the lead on lap 10 pulling ahead of the pack. Adelphi's Matt Dispensa regained the lead on lap 11 but Saeed did not back down with 200 meters to go he switched into overdrive with a 29 second sprint and finished 15 meters ahead of Dispensa.

Other top performers for the Highlanders were: Heffernan placing third in the 1000 meter race; Nicole Kerrison finished in the top five of the 400 meter hurdles; Lesley Hendricks with an eighth place finish in the 400 meter run and Ettie Ebewo and Denaya Hemingway placing in the top ten of the discus throw and hammer throw.

In the men's 2000 meter race walk, Doug Colaizzo, Andrew Coslow and Duc Tran finished two, three, four while Steve Schreyer picked up a fifth place finish in the pole volt with a height of 12'5.

NJIT will return to action when they travel to Philadelphia, PA on April 24 to compete at the Penn Relays.
