QUEENS, NY - Fairfield University took three close games from New Jersey Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon, defeating the Highlanders, 3-0, in the final match of the St. John's Classic in women's volleyball action.
The first game went into extra points before Fairfield prevailed, 31-29. The Stags then went on to take game two and three, 30-18 - 30-20.
In the first game, the Highlanders started out quickly taking a 5-12 advantage as Fairfield battled back coming within two points on a kill by Katie Mann bringing the score to 11-13.
The match became knotted at 21 as the Stags answered with three straight points taking a 24-21 lead. The Highlanders took a timeout to recuperate and bounced back winning the next point with a block by Ashley Craig and Rebecca Wilkinson.
The Highlanders then tied the game at 29 with a kill by Agnieszka Pregowska but the Stags recorded the last two points of the match taking game one from NJIT 31-29.
Sophomore Kristy Haeckel recorded a match-high 18 kills leading NJIT and picking up seven digs on defense. Teammate Danielle Thompson registered 21 assists for the Highlanders. Senior Craig piled up 11 in three games of action.
Sophomores' Sabrina Baby and Erica Schultz each notched 13 digs on the defensive side as Katrina Hornstein followed behind with 11. Outside hitter Pregowska posted eight kills while Hornstein collected seven.
Fairfield's offense was led by Lauren Campbell who connected with 11 kills on 18 attempts and no errors with a .611 hitting percentage.
The Highlanders return to action on Wednesday, September 5, when they travel down the road to South Orange, NJ to face Seton Hall University. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30pm.
