Navy Takes NJIT, 3-1

ANNAPOLIS, MD - After taking the first game, host Navy took the next three frames to claim a 3-1 victory in day one of the Trident Classic in women's volleyball action Friday night.

The Midshipmen who improve their overall record to 5-1 won the match 26-30, 30-27, 30-24, and 30-28.

NJIT was led by sophomore outside hitter Kristy Haeckel combining for 14 kills and four total blocks. Teammate Katrina Hornstein followed behind with 11 while Agnieszka Pregowska and Kubra Tanrikulu each added nine.

On the defensive side, the Highlanders combined for 79 digs - led by sophomore libero Sabrina Baby with 27. Tanrikulu dug-up 21 as Hornstein contributed with 13. Junior middle Rebecca Wilkinson recorded a team-high 5 total blocks.

Transfer sophomore Erica Schultz piled up a match-high 39 assists. Schultz recorded 35 assists in her Highlander debut against Central Connecticut State on Aug. 25.

For Navy, Rachel Dougherty recorded a match-high 19 digs leading three double-figure totals. Jessie Sims and Marissa Watson each posted a double-double (13 kills 12 digs ) (50 assists, 13 digs) while Alexa Gibbs and Krista Eschelman each notched 11 apiece.

The Highlanders return to action tomorrow September 8, when they face Central Connecticut State at 11am and close-up the Trident Classic against Marist at 4pm. This will be the second meeting for the Highlanders and Blue Devils this season.
