vs. Grambling State vs. North Texas
TULSA, OK - NJIT sophomore Sabrina Baby was named to the all-Tournament team as the women's volleyball team split games in the final day of the Tulsa Invitational, Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders swept Grambling State, 3-0, and were topped by North Texas 3-0, to earn the split.
In game one Saturday morning, the NJIT women's volleyball team recorded their second victory of the season sweeping Grambling State 3-0 (30-18, 30-23, 30-24) in three straight frames. Grambling State fell to 3-6 on the season.
Sophomore transfer, Erica Schultz recorded her fifth double-double of the year piling up 14 assists and 15 digs. Against Lafayette on Tuesday, September 11, she posted her first triple-double of the year with 15 kills, 37 assists and 23 digs.
NJIT's Kristy Haeckel led the offense notching 13 kills to go along with four total blocks. Katrina Hornstein combined for nine kills and 12 digs. Helping out on the defensive side was junior Kubra Tanrikulu recording 13 digs. Setter Danielle Thompson tallied up 12 assists.
Junior Rebecca Wilkinson combined for four block assists in the victory.
For Grambling State, Kayla Williams led the way with seven kills while Ashley Cooper and Talon Morgan each recorded five kills apiece. Morgan also added a match-high 26 assists and 17 digs.
In game two, North Texas defeated the Highlanders 3-0 (30-16, 30-20, 30-22). With the win North Texas improves to 4-9 on the season while NJIT falls to 2-12 on the year.
Leading the way for the Highlanders was Schultz who picked up where she left off after defeating Grambling State this morning; combining for 18 assists and 17 digs. Libero Sabrina Baby dug-up a team-high 21 digs.
Outside hitter Haeckel tallied 10 kills while Hornstein followed behind with eight. Thompson who split time with Schultz at the setting position recorded 10 assists.
For North Texas, Catherine Coffey led the offense tallying 11 kills while Heather Maddox posted a game-high 35 assists. Jessica Hulsebosch recorded 26 digs as teammate Katy Prokof added 12.
Also named to the all-Tournament team was Julia Silva (Tulsa) who was also honored as MVP of the tournament Fabiola Nepomuceno (Tulsa), Nicole Boyle (Tulsa), Catherine Coffey (North Texas) and Erica Wendell (North Texas).
The Highlanders return to action when they host Morgan State on Tuesday, September 18. The match is scheduled to start at 7pm.
