OREM, UT - NJIT junior Agnieszka Pregowska and Chicago State's Alexandra Mason shared game-high honors with 15 kills, as Chicago State took a 3-1 decision, in the opening round of the Division I Women's Volleyball Independent Tournament hosted by Utah Valley this afternoon.
The Highlanders, which are 2-2 in the month of November, face Cal State Bakersfield tonight at 8:00pm (MT).
The teams were even at 1-1 after two games, as NJIT took the first game, 30-27, and Chicago State answered, 30-23, in the second game. The Cougars secured the victory with 30-25 and 30-26 wins in the last two games.
Pregowska led the Highlanders' offense with 15 kills and the defense with five total blocks combining for 106 blocks on the season. Sophomore setter Erica Schultz piled up 46 assists and eight digs.
Adding to the NJIT offense was senior Kubra Tanrikulu who notched a double-double combining for 13 kills, 10 digs. Sophomore Katrina Hornstein posted a double-double of her own with 12 kills, 12 digs. Kristy Haeckel added seven kills while freshman Baaba Hughes had six.
NJIT libero Sabrina Baby dug-up a game-high 26 digs leading three Highlanders in double-figures - Tanrikulu (10), Hornstein (12). Schultz added eight.
The Highlanders combined for 12 service aces led by Baby who shared game-high honors with Chicago State's Hanya Minta. Chicago State recorded 11 service aces.
For the Cougars, Mason led the team with 15 kills while Jennifer Hoffman followed with 14 and Jessica Khouri added 13 kills, 16 digs. Minta recorded a double-double with a game-high 48 assists and 12 digs.
Cougar Monica Toure finished the game with a game-high eight total blocks while teammates Khouri and Mason added six apiece. Chicago State posted 25 total blocks in the victory.
Chicago State takes on Cal State Bakersfield at 4:00pm (MT) as the Highlanders face Cal State Bakersfield at 8:00pm (MT).
