NCAA Division I Independent Volleyball Player/Defensive of the Week - 10.16.07
OREM, UT - NJIT sophomore libero Sabrina Baby is the national NCAA Division I Independent Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, award coordinator Clint Burgi of Utah Valley announced today.
Utah Valley's freshman Kayli Broadbent was named NCAA Division I Independent Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week with 52 kills (4.73) while hitting .344 for the week as Utah Valley went 2-1.
Baby was honored for her standout play as the Highlanders went 1-2, defeating Wagner while falling to UMBC and Saint Francis (PA) last week.
A product from Florianopolis, Brazil, Baby tallied 81 digs, averaging 6.75 per game, six service aces while posting double-figure totals in five matches in the digs category.
Two out of three games last week Baby posted 30 digs which came against Wagner and Saint Francis (PA). She notched a match-high 21digs on the road against UMBC.
On the season, Baby has 549 digs (5.60pg) and 50 service aces (0.50pg) which ranks her as the statistical leader in each category complied by award coordinator Clint Burgi.
The Highlanders are slated to return to action on Wednesday, October 17, when they travel to Baltimore, Maryland to take on Morgan State. The match is scheduled to start at 7pm.
In the teams first meeting this year on September 18, the Highlanders took a 3-0 decision from Morgan State. Leading the NJIT attack was junior Kubra Tanrikulu who posted a double-double leading the Highlanders offense with 13 kills, 10 digs en route to NJIT's third victory of the year.
