NJIT Tunes Up Next Sunday's Highlander Invitational

October 1, 2005

WEST PATERSON, NJ - The New Jersey Institute of Technology women's cross country squad ran in the NJAIAW championship meet at Garrett Mountain on Saturday in preparation for NJIT's own Highlander Invitational, to be held at Branch Brook Park in Newark on October 9 at 11:30 am (men's race at 10:30).

Despite being hampered by injury and illness, the Highlanders delivered a quality effort, taking third overall.

Liz Mayo, whose 22:08 over the 5 K course was tops for NJIT and was good for 13 th place. She was followed by Aileen Davila in 32 nd place with a time of 25:17, her season-best. Next for NJIT was Becky Lindsey, completing her first collegiate race by taking 38 th place in 26:05. Barbara DeLaCruz was 42 nd in 26:27. Viviana Florea, coming off injury, ran a gutsy 27:32 for 46 th . Newcomer Naysha Sanchez finished her first 5K race ever in 37:47 for 59 th place.

Looking ahead to Sunday's Highlander Invitational, coach Al Alonso and his team are hoping for support from the NJIT community. We are hoping since Branch Brook Park is so close to campus that we can count on the support of students, staff and faculty for our home meet said the coach.
