NEWARK, NJ - The New Jersey Institute of Technology women's cross country team took the team championship of its own Highlander Invitational, conducted Sunday in nearby Branch Brook Park.
Liz Mayo was the top individual finisher for NJIT, placing seventh and covering the 5-kilometer course in a school-record 21:08.
Not far behind Mayo, in ninth place, was freshman Katie Carroll, who came in at 21:20 . Jady Alvarez of the Highlanders was 11 th at 21:36 , making NJIT the only team with as many as three runners in the race's top 11.
NJIT also picked up important points farther down the board, as the Highlanders had the 20 th , 23 rd and 24 th finishers. Aileen Davila was 20 th ( 23:52 ), Rebecca Lindsey was 23 rd (24:22) and Barbara DeLaCruz was 24 th (24:23). All three are freshmen.
Next up for NJIT is the St. Joseph Invitational on October 16 at Sunken Meadow Park on Long Island.
