NEWARK, NJ - Freshman Cara Constantino won the women's race in the Highlander Invitational Sunday, setting an NJIT record for the Branch Brook Park course with a time of 20:58 in the 5 k race.
Constantino eclipsed the old NJIT course record that had been held by Liz Mayo, who completed her cross country career in 2005.
NJIT's Jackie McCaffrey was second among Division I runners and fourth overall in the race, coming in at 21:38, her best time in her first season running cross country. The third Highlander finisher was Joanna Powdhar, who is a member of the women's soccer team and ran cross country for the first time on Sunday, coming in at 25:46 and finishing sixth among the Division I entrants.
The other leading runners for NJIT were Aileen Davila (28:04; 8th in Division I); Jessica Ware (30:58; 9th) and Dharshini Sivakumaran (36:32; 10th).
NJIT's next scheduled action is on October 14 in the CTC Championship, hosted by DeSales University in Allentown, PA.
